André Franquin (3 January 1924 – 5 January 1997) was well-loved and famously regarded Belgian comic artist. Often erroneously quoted as its creator, he was the longest running and most well-known artist of the Spirou et Fantasio series before moving on to work on his own creations, including Gaston Lagaffe, Marsupilami, Modeste et Pompon and Les Idées Noires. He was often quoted as one of the founding fathers of the Marcinelle school of drawing, which describes a style that is emphatic and dynamic, with varying line widths and a high degree of motion.
